The debate
of whether factory OE navigation is better than portable navigation devises or
vice versa is ongoing. Studies show that many Americans that routinely use
these factory installed navigation units also use a portable GPS device or a
smartphone with a GPS application. For example, J.D. Power and Associates
performed a study that revealed 40% of Americans use both GPS devices and
factory installed navigation units. While 32% of Americans prefer only to use a
portable device such as a hand held or dash mounted GPS unit, the other 28%
prefer to use their smartphone application. There really is no clear choice on
which is better based on the fact that these numbers are constantly changing
due to technological advancements.
In a related study, 40% of factory
navigation owners say the reason they chose this application is due to the
added safety features such as speed sensitive locking which will not allow you
to enter address or POI’s thus aiding in keeping you focused on the road. The
factory navigation units that you can purchase and have installed if your
vehicle doesn’t already have one have so many helpful and safety oriented
features that for some it’s a no brainier. These new units can perform functions
that can save on the cost of travel, help you avoiding speeding tickets by
constantly monitoring your speed and can even warn you of upcoming speed
cameras and red light cameras! Most handheld applications do not have any of
these features.
